Going into a year, you never know what to expect.
We can't foresee the challenges, opportunities, and growth that'll be experienced.
2017 has been quite an incredible year for me and this blog. As I begin for the next year, I want to take a step back and review a few of my favorite highlights of my sustainable journey so far:
1. Completing my Shopping Ban
This time last year I was half way through my shopping ban where I challenged myself to not buy fast fashion for a year. As difficult as it was, it allowed me to take action for the convictions I had in my heart towards the fashion industry. Little did I know this challenge would expand my concern of sustainability to various aspects of my life.
It was one of the most eye opening experiences I had ever done.
2. Turning down work with one of my favorite fast fashion and skincare brands.
As my blog has began to expand, I was approached my two brands that I had deeply admired. These had both been companies I had frequently looked to for inspiration and adored. However I realized that by accepting the offers they had given me, I would be taking a step backward from my sustainable journey. Like my boyfriend always tells me, "There are a million offers out there. You need to choose the ones that align with your goals and vision." And now moving forward, I know that was the best descision I could have made.
3. Transition from sustainable fashion to lifestyle blog
This was a natural progression I saw coming. As I noted earlier, my Shopping Ban had paved the way for me to see how I can improve my lifestyle choices. In June, I took the leap from sustainable fashion blogger to sustainable lifestyle blogger and I haven't looked back. I had began this type of blogging knowing that I knew very little of what I was getting myself into or what a conscious lifestyle even looked like. However I wanted to welcome others into my journey to keep me accountable and to be inspired themselves.
4. Becoming a Fair Trade Ambassador
As I was starting my final year at PLNU, I wanted to make sure that I was utilizing all the opportunities it offered me. And that included becoming a Fair trade Ambassador for my university's Center of Justice and Reconciliation. This was the first time my university had done anything like this. However I have had such a pleasure meeting so many young people and professionals that care deeply for fair trade.
5. Standing up for Syrian Refugees
This past semester I had a class that focused on International Business. There was one day in the semester when the professor had said pretty harmful, ignorant comments about Syrian Refugees in Germany. After an infuriating discussion in class, I gathered a group of students to get together and ask the professor to allow us to create a presentation knocking down all of the claims he had made in class. After 2 1/2 weeks of back and forth we eventually pulled together a presentation that had impacted many of the students in the class room. Though this had been emotionally/time draining, we knew that is worth it. It was worth to stand up for what's right. And though individually we were weak, together with our various talents we were able to make an impact.
6. Meeting incredible companies and people
One of the best parts of this blog for is not only having an outlet, but the doors it opens to new people and companies I wouldn't have met otherwise. I'm grateful for each person who has encouraged, challenged, and inspired me. But most importantly I'm thankful for those who take the time to read this blog. The community that surrounds this blog is incredible and I hope to see it grow in 2018.
With all this said, I can't wait to see what the next year holds.
2018, I'm ready for you.
